Coqualeetza
"Vestigia Nulla Resrorsum"
"No Backward Step" Written by former student Dorothy Matheson McIvor
Finally a positive book about native schools. Written by Dorothy Matheson McIvor, the granddaughter of Princess Elizabeth Deeks of the Tsimshean Tribe of Port Simpson. The book chronicles her time at Coqualeetza Residential School in Sardis, B.C. which was the largest Protestant Indian School in Canada.
Dorothy writes from her earliest childhood memories to her graduation and beyond. She reflects on some of the local history of the Fraser Valley and the Pacific Coast. Dorothy also gives us an insight to the Native lifestyle in the late 1800's and early 1990's.
There is also a wonderful poem in the back of the book which is a tribute to the family history of the McIvor clan. The poem takes us back to 1933 when they found their very special place.
